เมื่อแรกนั้น อาจารย์ประสิทธิ์ ศิลปบรรเลง ได้ประพันธ์ขึ้นจากเพลงไทยเดิม ทางเปลี่ยน ของท่านบิดา (หลวงประดิษฐ์ไพเราะ) สำหรับการแสดงละครของคณะผกาวลี เรื่อง "เวียงฟ้า" (บทละครโดย "อิงอร" หรือ ศักดิ์เกษม หุตาคม) สำหรับขับร้องคู่ชาย-หญิง โดยจำกัดเครื่องดนตรีไว้ ๑๔ ชิ้น หลังจากนั้น ก็นำมาเขียนเป็นบทเพลงในลักษณะเล่นโดยเครื่องสาย ๔ ชิ้น (String Quartet) และต่อมาได้ดัดแปลงให้เป็นเพลงบรรเลงโดยใช้ส่วนของเครื่องสายทั้งหมด (String Section) ของวงดุริยางค์ซิมโฟนี ดังปรากฏในตัวอัลบั้มเพลง "เสี่ยงเทียน" ที่ผลิตในปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๓๙ อัปสร กูรมะโรหิต ลูกศิษย์ใกล้ชิดของท่านได้นำมาเรียบเรียงขึ้นใหม่ในปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๑ ภายใต้การแนะนำของประสิทธิ์ ศิลปบรรเลง โดยใช้ผลงานบางส่วนของ String Quartet ของท่านเพื่อการประพันธ์ให้เป็นเพลงสำหรับวงซิมโฟนีทั้งวง และมีการขับร้องเดี่ยวโซปราโนอยู่ด้วย
คุณลัดดา (สารตายน) ศิลปบรรเลง ภริยาของประสิทธิ์ ศิลปบรรเลง เป็นผู้ให้คำร้อง โดยตั้งใจทำเป็นการเทิดพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ในวโรกาสพระราชพิธีมหามงคลเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา ๖ รอบ

Originally written for a string quartet, this work was Prasidh’s orchestration of the traditional Thai version composed by his father, the famed Luang Praditpairoh (Sorn Silapabanleng). In subsequent compositions, it was performed by the entire string section of the symphony orchestra, which lent full-bodied sound to the piece.
Apsorn Kurmarohita, the fond pupil and one of Prasidh’s last students of composition, sought to rearrange and extend the piece, basing it partly on Prasidh’s string quartet work, to include a voice in this new version of Damnern Sigh. Ladda Saratayon Silapabanleng, the wife of Prasidh was asked to compose the lyrics to honour our great King Bhumiphol’s wisdom, insight and inspiration.
