สมัยเป็นนักเรียนโรงเรียนนาฏดุริยางค์ กรมศิลปากร ครูลัดดาได้รับเลือกจากหลวงวิจิตรวาทการให้ขึ้นเวทีเล่นละครตั้งแต่เป็นนักเรียนจนกระทั่งเป็นครูของโรงเรียนนาฏดุริยางค์ ได้เคยเดินทางไปแสดงศิลปวัฒนธรรมไทยที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่นและแมนจูเรีย เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2477 พร้อมกับคุณหญิงประภาพรรณ วิจิตรวาทการ และคุณหญิงชิ้น ศิลปบรรเลง การแสดงที่ญี่ปุ่นนั้นเดินทางไปตามหัวเมืองสำคัญต่างๆ ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างมาก
เมื่อกลับมาจากญี่ปุ่น นับได้ว่า ครูลัดดา สารตายน เป็นดาราผู้มีชื่อเสียงมากที่สุดในการแสดงละครของหลวงวิจิตรวาทการในยุคนั้น รับบททั้งพระเอกนางเอก ปรากฏอยู่ในข้อมูลการแสดงละครของหลวงวิจิตรวาทการแทบทุกเรื่อง เช่น เลือดสุพรรณ, เจ้าหญิงแสนหวี, พ่อขุนผาเมือง ฯลฯ นอกจากนั้น ยังได้รับเลือกให้ขับร้องเพลงไทยและเพลงปลุกใจในแผ่นเสียงครั่งสมัยก่อนเป็นที่นิยมของผู้ฟัง
